What is Colonial Virtual Program?

Colonial Virtual Program (CVP) provides online delivery of curriculum that allows students to be taught from home through instruction via the internet. Students can work from home and/or school on a full or part time basis.

 

Who can enroll in courses through Colonial Virtual Program?

Children who are students of participating Colonial County schools/districts, with the approval of school personnel, may enroll in courses with Colonial Virtual Program.

 

Why would a student choose to enroll in CVP?

Students participate in Colonial Virtual Program courses for varied reasons.  First, CVP offers a wide array of course offerings to accommodate most student academic needs.  Because of the flexibility of the program, courses through CVP suit students with varied responsibilities such as: working students, students who have become parents, and students involved in pre-professional extracurricular activities.  Online courses also benefit students who need a more challenging curriculum or more individualized curricular plan.  Sometimes our traditional educational system does not suit all students and online courses offer opportunities that a brick and mortar setting may not be able to provide.  Another cited reason for enrolling students in CVP is because parents want to have more control over their children’s education and the Colonial Virtual Program allows parents to remain actively involved in the delivery and scheduling of instruction.  Whatever the reason to take courses through Colonial Virtual Program, students have the opportunity to become prepared for life after graduation whether they are entering the workforce or going onto a post-secondary institution.  Students who participate in the CVP program will also be prepared to assimilate in an ever-changing technological society.

 

What equipment is needed to participate in the program?

Students must have internet access at home.  All full-time students are provided a laptop computer and internet stipend to access coursework.  To help defray the cost of internet access, each household receives a $40 internet stipend per month for 10 months.

 

Part-time students are responsible for having their own computer to use at home or at school and will not receive an internet access stipend.

 

What grade levels are serviced through Colonial Virtual Program?

Students in grades K-12 who are residents of participating schools and districts in Colonial County and partnering IU districts can enroll.

 

What are the benefits to enrolling my child in Colonial Virtual Program?

The benefits of enrolling a child into Colonial Virtual Program as opposed to a cyber-charter school are extensive.  A few of the important benefits are:

  • Flexible scheduling
  • Participation in local school district extra-curricular activities and school-sponsored events
  • Local support
  • CIU technical support
  • Participation in Career and Technical Centers (CTCs)
  • Instructional supports offered by the home school district.

 

In addition, students graduate with a diploma from their home school/district. With local schools’ consistently high rankings at the state and local levels, a district diploma is valuable in the college admission process.

 

How do I enroll my child in Colonial Virtual Program?

When a student wants to enroll in Colonial Virtual Program online courses, the student or family member needs to contact the school counselor or school liaison to begin the process.  The school representative is then responsible for completing the online enrollment form with relevant student information and recommends appropriate courses to ensure all graduation requirements are fulfilled. A CVP program specialist will contact the student, schedule the orientation, and complete the enrollment process. Once the enrollment form from the school is received, CVP can outfit the student with the necessary equipment and have the student ready to begin courses.

 

How is attendance monitored?

Each student is expected to log into his/her coursework five days a week, whatever times and days are appropriate for that student.  The program allows flexibility and autonomy for each student/family to decide what schedule works best for them.  Students must be logged into their student account and actively complete work at least 5 days per week.  CVP will contact the school liaison with any attendance concerns and plan for follow-up with the family.

 

What equipment and/or technology are needed in order to take online courses?

To complete the courses from home, a computer is needed.  The home must be equipped with wireless internet or the student must have access to high speed internet.

 

For full-time students without a computer, CVP or the home district will provide students with the necessary equipment.  The equipment is the property of the school district and therefore will need to be returned to the district upon withdrawal or graduation.

 

Who do I contact if I need help in a course?

If the question relates to course content, books, materials needed, assessments, or assignments, the student should contact the online teacher facilitator of the course.  If the student has questions about computer specific technology issues, platform problems, or basic computer questions, the student should contact the computer vendor technology support.  If the question relates to the program, policies, or any other aspect of Colonial Virtual Program, please contact the CVP office at 610-515-6566  or rharris@ciu20.org.

 

What is asynchronous instruction?

Asynchronous instruction means the student is not required to be online at the same time as the online instructor.  Students may work at their own pace to complete coursework.  Most courses offered through CVP are asynchronous.  This requires excellent time-management on the part of the student.

 

When can a student enroll in courses?

CVP accepts enrollments during the year, although some exceptions may exist.

 

Does the school district provide transportation?

No, the school district does not provide any transportation for the student who may have to return to the school for services.  That responsibility falls on the family of the student.

Upon completion of the Advanced Placement courses, will I receive AP credits?

The AP courses offered through the Colonial Virtual Program consist of only coursework.  Arrangements to take the AP exam must be made through the home school district.

What is the cost of courses through Colonial Virtual Program?

The cost of the online courses and necessary equipment are paid by the home school district so there is no cost to parents.  Credit Recovery (summer school), Accelerated courses, and a variety of supplemental prep courses (SAT) are usually at the expense of the parents and students.

 

What do I do if I want to withdrawal from the program?

If a student is having problems with the coursework, technology, or any other aspect to online learning, it is the responsibility of the student/family to contact the district or CVP immediately.  We will do everything possible to rectify any concern and work to make this a successful school year.  If the situation cannot be resolved or the student needs to withdrawal from the program, an CVP representative will refer the student to their guidance counselor who will complete the online withdrawal form.  If the student wishes to withdrawal from the district, the student will also need to contact the district for the school procedures.

 

What are parents’ responsibilities?

Parents are asked to attend the mandatory orientation meeting for newly enrolled students.  Parents must arrange for wireless internet within the home.  Parents should be prepared to provide supervision and act as a contact in supporting their student to be accountable for their work.  We ask that parents look at the bi-weekly progress reports to monitor student progress.  This program is only successful if the student completes the work.  It is important that students have a solid support system to help them stay on track with their course work.

 

Does Colonial Virtual Program impose deadlines?

All courses are semester-based.  To acquire a full credit in any core subject area, the student would need to complete both parts of the course. The deadline for semester one is usually in line with the semester break for local districts.  All semester one coursework must be complete to move on to the next semester coursework.  Second semester deadline is in line with local districts end of year dates. The exception is for Graduating Seniors (school districts will set this date).  To remain on target for on time course completion, students should complete a minimum of 3-5 lessons per day. Extending deadlines will only be granted upon extenuating circumstances and requires district administrative approval.

Are there credit recovery options available?

Yes, we offer both credit recovery courses throughout the school year and summer school options.

 

Is the program accredited?

Yes, courses available through Colonial Virtual Program are aligned to the PA Core Standards and are taught by highly qualified PA certified teachers.

 

How will student’s progress be monitored?

Staff members fromColonial Virtual Program work with school district personnel to monitor progress of students. When students are not keeping up with work or doing poorly in a course, both the building liaison and the parents are notified.  The course percentage from each online course is delivered to the district upon completion and the district is responsible for designating a letter grade according to school district guidelines.  Report card and transcript generation may vary from district to district.

 

How will a student’s progress be reported?

Parents will have access to their child’s grades and progress via the student online account at any time.  Most vendors provide a parent portal for parents to log into to view grades and progress.  Other vendors offer a reporting option where a CVP staff member will send parents regular reports on students’ progress.  Interim reports will be sent at the halfway point of each semester-based course (mid-November in the fall and mid-April in the spring) to notify parents and district of student progress.

 

Will Colonial Virtual Program students be prepared for graduation and life after high school?

Colonial Virtual Program embraces the philosophy that online courses should be as rigorous as those taken in the school buildings. The program guidelines provide courses that meet standard NCAA eligibility requirements. All credits earned through Colonial Virtual Program are recorded as part of each high school student’s official school district transcript.  Students receive career and college counseling through their local school district.

 

Can accommodations be met for students that are English Language Learners or have IEPs?

Online courses have built in flexibility, adaptations such as text-to-speech, unlimited time on tests, translation features, and vocabulary help.  We contract with the local districts to meet the needs and accommodations outlined by a student’s IEP.  The student must be monitored by a case manager assigned by the school to ensure the student’s needs are being met.  The local school’s special education staff should develop the IEP and create a learning plan that meets the student’s needs.  All students enrolled in CVP courses must have someone in the household that speaks English.

What is the role of the Colonial Virtual Program specialists?

Colonial Virtual Program specialists act as an intermediary between the online vendors and school districts.  CVP works to serve as an advocate for students and families and provides current information to school district staff members.  Our primary goal is to make sure each student is making progress and is meeting or exceeding in his or her course expectations. We closely monitor student progress and address concerns as they arise by contacting the appropriate party whether it is parent, student, school, online instructor, or other legal guardian.  We are actively involved in meeting the needs of all students and districts.

 

How does CVP support gifted and talented students?

Online courses through CVP are an exceptional choice for gifted students. They offer the ability for students to move through course material at an accelerated pace, attempt more difficult coursework, and offer access to challenging courses not available in local school districts.

 

Does CVP offer courses with varying difficulty levels?

CVP courses are rigorous, and include remedial and honors level courses. AP courses are also available.

Are students required to take state-standardized tests?

Yes, all CVP students are required to take the same state-mandated exams as their brick and mortar peers at their local school.  This includes PSSAs and Keystone Exams.
